Just had the crank position sensor replaced on my 98 900 to (hopefully!!) cure a crankover-but-no-firing problem. There were no flashing codes from the check-engine light and dealer said no codes were found using his diagnostic tool. Problem only occurred with temps below about 20F (common here in gods country this time of year :) ). Dealer said only hint was that the voltage output from the sensor seemed to vary some. You can to a simple, but unreliable based on my experience, check by hooking up a test lamp across the contacts of the idle-control valve connector. Remove fuse #28 for 5 seconds, refit fuse, and turn on ignition. Lamp should shine for 6 seconds then go off, indicating main relay working correctly. When it goes out, hit started and lamp should relight. If not, it indicated ECM not getting signal from crank sensor. Mine lit, so not sure how good a check this is (or it may be that there is another gremlin lurking in my car!).
