I'm assuming it's a manual tranny? Yes, this is, unfortunatly, fairly normal. It's most likely the input shaft seal. Parts to replace all four seals (input shaft, both half-shaft, and shift-rod) will run about $100, labor is another $300. Depending on condition of your clutch and how long you plan on keeping the car, you might want to replace it (the clutch) while the labor is "free". Figure another ~$400 in parts for the kit, throwout bearing and new clutch cable. The ext. warr. should cover all but the new clutch parts.
It went on my '95 SEt at about 60k miles, others have reported similar mileages. I guess time is part of the equation as well.
