My 96 900 SET with 70k has just been diagnosed by the local dealer as needing a new head gasket...to the tune of $1200. This comes 3 months after a new DI Cassette ($900), 6 months after a new clutch and brakes, as well as the normal service charges. My question is, is the dealer's quote in the ballpark? Should I look for an independent? Also, is this a harbinger of things to come (now that I paid off the bank loan?)?
Maybe I would be smarter to fill it up with coolant and trade it in to an unsuspecting Audi dealer (GOD knows I will not buy SAAB/GM again, which surely means "crap" in Swedish...).
Any insight would be appreciated.
