My shifter is a little rubbery but never 'dead'. I had like 4 bushings go, finally replaced the linkage and it's better that new, I believe. It's a pain to replace, and since it's shrouded in a rubber boot, it's hard to check, too.
It could be the bushing, the normal mode of failure is when the whole bushing pops out entirely and the linkage can't get to reverse. The bushing is made of two parts, a ball (that the rod goes thru) suspended in the fingers of the bushing. It's all plastic and even the replacement bushings seemed flimsy.
I guess if you just popped the ball out, the fingers might give you enough support to shift yet still be soggy.
