I have a 1996 900S that just turned 80,000 miles old. I bought the car a year and a half ago, and haven't had to do brakes on it. Well, I can tell that they are about shot...when I first drive the car it sounds like the front brakes are grinding a bit. It sounds different than my previous cars which usually have some sort of wear indicator that squeaks really loud. Also my stopping ability has degraded.
The brakes still stop nice and smooth, there is no pulsing at all, so I am thinking that I will only need some pads. I really want to keep the car stock and stay with Saab parts, but I don't want to go to the dealer here in Syracuse and gouged. I was thinking that I could maybe order a new set of pads (I think I will do fronts and rears, even though the rears seem fine) online. Any thoughts as to whether I should do it via a Saabnet sponsor (if so, which one) or just go to the parts department at the dealer? I know an indy mechanic in Syracuse who doesn't specialize in Saab, but I figure that the brakes should be pretty easy for him to do without botching the job.
So to summarize my questions:
1) If no pulsing when using the brakes, is it safe to say its just the pads? How would I know if anything else is wearing out?
2) How much do a set of 4 saab pads cost, and where should I get them?
3) How much should I expect to pay for labor?
4) If anyone has used some aftermarket pads for a substantial time period and if they have lasted longer than their stock pads, would you let me know what they are and where to get them, price etc?
Thanks for your help!
