Shur-grip work on 900SE Posted by Ken [Email] (#2113) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ken) on Fri, 16 Feb 2001 01:47:06 In Reply to: I have a set of "Shur-Grip Z" cable chains...., REM in Seattle [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 15 Feb 2001 10:10:26 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I had a pair of Shur-grip Z cable chains for my 900SE that we took to Tahoe back in November. The chains fit OK and worked well. I spun the wheels a few times because there was an accident on I-80 that closed the road for a few hours and we had stop and go for a LONG time. When I got back from the trip I noticed the front tires were excessively worn. They were a new pair of Yokohama's with only 10,000 miles or so, but the fronts were shot. I don't know if it was the chains or my agressive driving. I didn't notice it before the trip, so I suspect the ice or chains. The original tires lasted over 25,000 miles, but I replaced them because of a cut in one and a nail in another.
The chains didn't rub anywhere on the car, and for a one-time trip they are far cheaper than the spykes spider set-up. Cable chains are about the only other thing that will fit, because of the limited clearance. I couldn't see paying $300+ for one or two ski trips. We are moving to Virginia this summer so I would only get one season out of them.
Be sure you wash the chains as soon as possible after you remove them. Mine rusted over the weekend.
