Earlier this week my mechanic told me the alternator was bad in a 1997 900 s (51K) that I recently purhased. Then, today I was told that when they tried to start the car the battery was dead so I am having them replace that as well. Is it ordinary for the battery and alternator to go out together? Does this signal a deeper problem such as an electrical short? I spoke to a couple saab service guys and they said prior to 96, saabs were know to have electrical problems but by 96-97 those problems were cleaned up. They also sugggested that the problem was probably that the battery was going bad which drew more from the alternator so that both failed. Does anyone know how to determine if there is an electrical short without waiting for the battery to go dead again? Any advice would be appreciated.
Tim
