Driving with a alternator that is not putting out full voltage will eventually drain your battery. If you deep cycle (fully drain) a regular auto battery enough times, especially in winter, you will kill it. Did you have battery problems prior to the alt problem? Any decent shop should be able to recharge and load test the battery to see if it has any life left. I don't know about a bad battery contributing to an alternator failure . . .
You are just over the warranty period on your car. You should talk with your Saab dealer about this repair. Saab may give you a "goodwill" adjustment, contributing the alternator if you pay for the installation labor. If not, shop around for the best price (SaabNetwork sponsors, Euro-Electric.com, etc)
I have a '97 900 SET. After the last 3+ years with it, I think Bosch beats out Lucas as the "Prince of Darkness" (I have owned a bunch of Triumphs and MGs). My 1st battery was replaced at 10k miles (shorted cell). 1st alternator went at 27k miles (elec failure). 2nd alternator went at 59k miles (bearing failure). On my 4th SID unit. 2nd ignition switch. 2nd Radio head unit. Keeping my fingers crossed (waiting for the DI cassette to fail). . . .
