Your engine will run with 87 or 92 octane fuel since it has a sensor to detect ping/knock (premature fuel detonation). When the sensor detects knocking the engine is effectively "detuned"; this decreases performance in order to prevent engine damage. This is primarily present when accelerating, under boost. Higher octane does not improve mileage when it is not needed (most n/a engines) and tends to improve mileage when it is needed (most turbos) since the "detuning" decreased the engine efficiency. My advice: If your driving is around town, rarely into boost, lower octane is probably OK. OTOH, if you frequently are spooling the turbo into boost, use 92 octane.
