If your milage goes up with lower octane, this means that the engine is detuned while crusing or wherever you engine spends most of its time.
If others are seeing the opposite behavour under similar conditions, I would be suspicious of aquired octane demand. This can be cause by hot spots in the combustion chamber resulting from deposits. (Add canned spiel about Techron Concentrate here.)
If you are on boost a lot, perhaps the ECU just gets keeps some detune in place while on the lower octane.
