purge valve / clunk Posted by MJM [Email] (#872) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MJM) on Wed, 21 Feb 2001 11:38:03 In Reply to: MJM - Persistent problems thoughts, fsik, Wed, 21 Feb 2001 09:49:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Before I took the car in, the clunk showed up over small road imperfections, a pot-hole, ripples, the lip between the street and my driveway. The service manager said that one of the mounting or clamp bolts on the LF strut had worked loose. They tightened it and not only did the clunk go away, but the steering was much tighter. I was really pleased. Then about 2 days after that, another clunk showed up, this one showing up with combinations of large steering angles and fwd/reverse, like when doing a three-point turn. Then a couple of days after that I started hearing another clunk when I push it a bit in a corner. I'm thinking that it's the subframe or similar, like you mention. So, perhaps another trip to the dealer. One good thing about being a regular there is that the shuttle driver is a cute young co-ed who is quite fun to talk to.
The evap purge valve is an interesting idea. The t/s flow chart in the shop manual shows that as a check point as well. I was able to pinch off the IAC tube once during high idle and the idle didn't change for 15-20 seconds, then came down to normal. I don't know if that was coincidence or not, but if the IAC was the only source of air to the engine, the idle should have dropped immediately. The symptom hasn't repeated when I've had the time/conditions to poke at it further. IIRC, the only diagnostic for the purge valve was with TECHII/ISAT, do you know if that's the case? I think I can pinch off the line from the evap. valve to the engine, that should help identify or clear the valve.
thanks,
Mike
