If you add a seperate amplifier to your stereo system, and don't touch the head unit, there is no reason why the SID computer will have a problem. The amplifier draws its current directly from the battery, and powers up by a control wire that goes hot to turn the amp on, cold to shut it off. The wire can be connected to accessory fuse, or to the remote wire that makes the power antenna go up and down. You can easily run speaker level inputs off the rear speakers without causing the head unit any harm, or you can take low level input off the back of the head unit. Neither have any connection to the SID at all. Unless you really screw up the wiring of the amplifier, the SID screen won't even know that the external amplifier is there. I have a 600W amplifier in my '96 900S and have had no problems. SID is fine, and the stereo sounds wonderful. There is absolutely no reason to change the head unit unless you have a better one.
