here's the story: last week, i went on vacation and was forced to leave my '97 900SET at the frigid parking ramp at the milwaukee airport. it sat there for 5 days in temps that were between -10 and 25 degrees.
when i returned and tried to start the car, it took a couple more turns than necessary, but it did start without requiring assistance (via jumper cables). i then drove it 2 hours to my home (where it sat in a 'heated' [48 degrees] garage for a day). then my wife took it to work on tuesday and made it home without incident.
when she took it yesterday, she noticed that it took a little longer to fire when she started it in the morning, but it did start - so she took it to work. but after sitting in the parking lot all day in 10 degree weather, she could not start it to drive home. so i took my trusty '92 900S to where she was, gave the car a jump start, and instructed her to drive around for 15-20 minutes to give the car time to charge the battery back up. when she got home, she parked the car in our 'heated' garage. but when she went out to it this morning, it would not turn over again - dead as a doornail.
shouldn't her driving it around last nite have charged it? is this simply a sign that my battery is getting old (i do not believe that the previous owner ever replaced it - thus it would be about 5 years old)? or could this be a sign that i have a much bigger electrical problem that is slowly draining the battery?
note: i did have the idler pulley, belt, and alternator replaced about 2 months ago....if that makes a difference.
i'm planning on stopping on the way home from work tonite to pick up a new battery - is there anything i should be looking for? the one with the most cold cranking amps? a specific size? a specific brand? i don't have the owner's manual (or my bentley book) with me, so i'm not sure what is recommended.....
also, will i need any special tools besides my wrench set to disconnect/connect the cables?
lastly, should i stop on my way home from work and pick one up first (what should i do with the old one?), or should i go home, take out the old one, and bring it with me when i pick up the new one?
thanks,
aaron
