People really like the Michelin Arctic Alpins, the Gislaveds, and the Blizzaks. I'm sure I'm missing something here.
I have the Arctic Alpins and Gislaveds on our two cars.
The Gislaves on our 9-3 are better when there's > 3 inches of snow on the ground. They're mushy and dry handling is pretty bad. We didn't stud them but should have.
We have the Acrtic Alpins on our Saturn L. They're not as good in the deep snow. They're much better on icy slippery roads and the dry handling is about equivalent to an all season tire.
Since what scares me the most is ice and I don't normally drive in deep snow, the Michelins are my pick.
We have about 3" on the ground today in NH and the Gislaveds were great. It's amazing what ANY snow tire can do to your handling.
hint: Go for a taller skinnier snow tire. It's better in the deep snow as it keeps the tires from "plowing".
