I've had the Konis for 8-10k miles now, with a variety of clunks. I don't know that I can blame them all on the new struts.
Right after they were installed (dealer did the front, I did the rear) I noticed a solid but soft clunk as I turned the wheel back and forth (in the driveway). With the help of a friend I tried to figure out where it was coming from; I could feel it in the drag link (the one that attaches with the oil-filled TCA bushing). I took it to the dealer for a check up before autocrossing and they gave it a clean bill of health - couldn't duplicate the clunk. That clunk seemed to go away, but a few months later another one showed up under rough surfaces. After some time for it to get suitably bad, a trip to the dealer turned up a loose mounting bolt on the lf strut. They weren't sure if it was their fault or mine. That fix really tightened up the steering, at least for a day or two. Now, though, like I mentioned, the car has developed a clunk that shows up in the three-point turn I do to get out of my parking spot at work, and another one (related?) that I've heard a time or two in the middle of an aggressively-taken corner.
In deference to the dealer, the rough surface clunk has stayed away. My car now has 71k miles on it, so I have to wonder if some of these clunks are just from the front end getting loose.
I do wonder if the fact that the Konis are inserts and not full struts has something to do with their "clunkability". The old housings have to be slightly machined to accept the Koni inserts and that may remove some integrity.
Perhaps I'm expecting too much from my car.
Regards,
Mike
