Someone just pointed me to this thread.
I maintain the Saab Commemorative Edition Registry. I'm guessing that this car is a Comm Ed based on the post, and that you had another that is now DOA. Any chance I could persuade you to add both cars to the registry? It doesn't matter if they are show cars, beaters, or RIPs. We just want to get their status in the registry.
On topic--It's a tough call. Without seing the damage it's tough to say weather it's worth fixing. I owned #217 at one point. I found out after purchase that it was a rebuilt car. I started the process of totally restoring it. After I got about halfway done, I got the opportunity to buy a low-milage CE in pristene condition and I gave up on #217. Last week I had what was left of it hauled away. As the guy was strapping it on the flatbed he said; "someday you'll regret this". In spite of the fact that I own a near-mint CE, he was right. I do regret not keeping the car and finishing the resto. If you really like the car, get it fixed. If you do fix it, do it right. If it were me, I'd look for a car with a good replacement quarter, cut out the spot welds and replace the complete unit. Bang-out and Bondo is quicker and easier and will certainly give good results if you go to a good body shop, but complete replacement is not difficult and will keep the car's integrity. I had to replace the front PS fender on my '93 CE. I got a black fender from a donor car, cut out the spot welds and installed it on my car just like the original was mounted. I used plug welds in place of the spot welds. I only had to paint the inner fender and the weld area concealed by the door. The integrity of the paint on the visible areas was good and I took precautions not to damage it while welding. It is nearly impossible to see that the fender is a replacement.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
