If I remember correctly, in both the book and the movie, they said they knew about the storm from an earlier weather report from NASA, but that it was initially expected not to be severe enough to cause problems. Then the updated report from NASA said that it was going to be stronger which is why the mission commander made the call to get to the launch craft to abort the whole mission. So, they didn't really ignore it. My take was that a storm of sufficient magnitude to abort the mission was unlikely enough that they knew it would be a rare event and in most storms they could just hole up in the hab and ride it out. But, if a bad enough storm did occur, they knew going in that that could scrub the mission.
So, yes, you have to accept a storm of sufficient severity as the driving plot point, but I am not sure I see where you thought they ignored it and let that ruin the movie.
