Ladder 49 movie review...

I had the privilege of seeing this movie two weeks ago Thursday. It was one of the "open" sneak previews thanks to one of the local Fire Departments.
I enjoyed the movie, although, as one might expect, it is quite sad. The basic story centers around "the life a firefighter" leads, and they do well making it just sentimental enough that you are not turned off by it. That firefighter is Joaquin Phoenix as Jack Morrison; Travolta plays Chief Kennedy, Jack's boss and mentor.
Without giving it away, it opens with a massive warehouse/building fire in Baltimore that Ladder 49 is called to. It threw me, in that most of the movie is then told in flashbacks, which I was not expecting. Quite a bit of comedy is included with the various pranks firefighters play on one another, especially the "Probies." Also, the special effects, with the explosions and such are pretty good.
No, the movie is not like Backdraft, other than being a firefighter movie, nor is it as over the top as Rescue Me (F/X series). I am not really a big fan of Phoenix, something to do with Gladiator and the scar, but that is probably because he did an excellent job in his role as Emperor, but he is a pretty good actor and plays the part well.
Thanks for reading. Sorry I didn't write this up right after I saw it, and no I did not notice any Saabs. Enjoy!
Sean
