The blurb on the back says it's a mix of the Da Vinci Code and Name of the Rose...not even close, but a fun afternoon's read nonetheless. It's a suspenseful story about some college students and a mysterious manuscript that they are trying to deciper. If you know anything about art history or the Renaissance in particular, you'll find a lot to enjoy here. Also, if you went to Princeton you'll probably love the book, as much of the action takes place on the Princeton campus, which is described in loving detail; if you didn't go to Princeton, be prepared to learn more than you ever wanted to know about the traditions and social history of the supper clubs (yawn). I thought the characters were a bit shallow. It wasn't a great book or anything, but it was good fun and it was mildly intellectually stimulating.
I was tickled to see a mention on page 85 of a Saab which belongs to one of the characters. However, this got irritating as the story progressed, as the Saab (no model identified, no color or other details given) was invoked enough times to make it almost a supporting character. It ended up seeming like a particularly empty attempt at branding, and my pleasure at seeing my favorite marque appear in a story turned into annoyance at what exactly the authors were trying to prove by having almost everyone else drive anonymous cars while this one person was privileged enough to drive a Saab. If the authors had at least identified a model, it might have made it seem less like a cheap attempt at defining a character by his choice of luxury goods. But I'm just cranky so maybe that's just me. :)
