...on the car's exhaust tip, my BBQ, sink, and everywhere else I've used it. A cleaner such as Bar Keepers can't cause SS to rust unless the SS is cheap and rust prone already (cheap as in too little nickel content).

BKF is abrasive but much finer than Comet and not as harsh. If you're worried, use toothpaste or a very fine polishing compound but be prepared to put in some muscle.
