Before a full detail, I'll wash the car once to get the loose stuff off, go back and look for tar, bugs etc to spot clean then re-wash again. BTW, I use the 2 bucket method for rinsing the rag. I won't worry about water spots, since they'll be removed during the clay process. Then, clay the paint. The clay can get dirty quick, so you'll need to pay attention. I can not stress how important it is to have a clean surface to polish. Any grit can and will get in the pads and put more scratches in.
