"LOOK WHERE THE CAR IS GOING."

This seems obvious, but the teen fenderbenders I have seen (and my own experience) make it worth repeating. Click and Clack, the NPR Tappet Brothers, were giving advice to a mom whose daughter had had a number of small accidents. They said "look where the car is going."

I repeat this advice in my head on two particular occasions - First, when backing up (do I really know that the area is still clear behind me and that my car will clear the fixed obstacles? - I have scared myself coming close to posts that I thought were further away. Plus my youngest daughter backed into a car in a parking lot in her first week of having a license, and also backed into her grandmother's car that was blocking our driveway in the dark on Christmas Eve.... ouch! Her paying the insurance deductibe got her attention and prevented subsequent mishaps.)

The second occasion when I repeat this advice is when stopped at an intersection where others have the right of way. Several pedesrians have been hit at the corner by my office when people are rushing home and make a quick left turn when the traffic clears without checking for pedestrians. Also, I have scared myself when stopped to make a right turn - after looking to the left for a long time waiting for traffic to clear, I have not noticed pedestrians about to walk in front of the car from the right. So before gunning it when a space opens up, I "Look where the car is going" - great Click and Clack advice for kids and adults.
