a number of years ago, I sent a 900 from the dealer to our indy for a headgasket job. Dealer quoted to replace a piston among other things, totalling >$6k. Our indy had it back on the road for around $2k, including a remachined head + brazed block pitting (a la Townsend)... I bet the dealer would have told me (seeing the pits) that I needed a new engine or it was time to buy a new car... that was 10 years ago... we're still driving it + love it!
the point of this story was that the dealer understood - they know our indy, they know most older Saabs go there, and they know he gets parts from them anyway... they smiled + understood... I paid them for the diagnosis (which they were good at btw) and took it to our indy for the repair... might need to be more diplomatic going from one indy to a competing indy though!
