I did it both on 95 VW Golf and 2003 Mini Cooper. In both cases the procedure can be done in about 5 minutes (maybe 30 minutes if you need to locate/follow instructions). It usually takes 2-4 big bolts and a few smaller ones. All the electrics is done with a single (VW) or two (Mini) connectors. So don't let this part to scare you from DIY.
