I looked at the weight numbers for the Grand Cherokee - they are not so different between the affected generations.

My take is ever-tightened emissions and fuel economy numbers, where in any mode sans full throttle they are suffocated to just barely breathe. In other words, don't expect anything close to promised numbers unless your you have "pedal to the metal".
