Test drove a 2009 BMW M3 the other day. 414hp, 6-spd stick, got me all excited just looking at it. But... during "normal" driving... I was underwhelmed. The drive did get me excited. Excited about my 2000 Viggen.
Here's the thing. My stock Viggen delivers about 260 lb-ft at around 2,000 rpm, and keeps delivering that all the way up to 5,000 or so. And the Viggen weighs 3,000 lbs. The M3 weighs, not sure, but probably 800 lbs more and delivers a max of 295 lb-ft but not until somewhere beyond 5,000 rpm. And it's 414 hp doesn't happen until somewhere near it's 8,300 rpm redline. Exciting... if you floor and hold it there until it's screaming. But how often do you do that. Really. During my test drive I did floor a few times and kept it floored for a couple seconds each time. I expected more. During my drive home in the Viggen I did the same thing and actually was more thrilled by the thrust of the Viggen. Now... line them up and truly race them and yup, the M3 will eat the Viggen. But you're average guy... even a car guy... on your average drive would actually feel like the Viggen has more thrust. And mine averages 25-27mpg in mixed driving! About 10mpg more than the M3.
What's my long point? Not saying an M3 is a bad car... it's fabulous. Just an example of how a lot of mass and a gradual power delivery can make a car feel not all that powerful.
