It all comes down to the specific design. A series hybrid can be engineered more simply: eg, no transmission, no coupling, etc. Many of the complaints re hybrids are complexity oriented...

I keep citing the wheel motors because, though there are most likely many issues to overcome, they address one of the biggest impediments for EV's: weight/space. Batteries are not light and need to go somewhere. The wheel motors remove the engine and tranny, driveshafts, and braking systems from under the hood + stuff them in the wheels. That frees up space under the hood for batteries and control electronics (and as Volvo pointed out, improved crash structures)...

but, yes, converting fuel to electricity + then electricity to kinetic energy is more wasteful than converting fuel directly to kinetic energy. But, the way we do that today involves losses in the transmission, and friction braking. Of course one can do regenerative braking with a parallel setup, but it is probably in most cases more complex + less efficient than it could be.
