Realty,
there's a figure called 'combustion ratio' which significantly affects Carnot cycle efficiency which most of our gasoline engines run on (this is Saab BB, not Mazda, right?). And there's another figure called 'effective combustion ratio' (physicists consider it being empirical, but engine engineers are using it fully) which depends on the intake pressure. There's no 20-30% efficiency when you're idling unless you snatched that very SVC engine from Trollhattan. And as far as I know that engine is still there in Sweden.

Ok, let's try another approach. Since most of fellows here do not adherent academic way of studying things and tend to be more practical, let's have a look at an engine performance graphs. You can pick up any engine you like. On a such graph you'll see the power vs rpm curve, torque vs rpm curve and - finally - petrol flow curve. Unfortunately, most of the graphs you are able to find will give you the full-load set of curves only. But should you be persistent and do digging deeper, you'll see what's happening on partial loads from idling to full load. Yep, modern engines with variable valve timing work better - i.e. more efficient - than old ones, but they're far from being a perfect one which is showing a constant efficiency thru the whole RPM-load range.

So... how many miles have you made at WOT today?

Zig

P.S.
Sorry for being this naughty. I initially thought to skip it, but just could not help it.
