We recently started looking to replace our aging Craftsman chain-drive openers and the Sommer direct-drive seems to get the most consistent positive reviews. It's German-made (if that counts for anything) and the only downside we've read about so far is that it's a little slower than a chain-drive opener. It is also slightly more expensive than a run-of-the-mill chain-drive opener, but it may also be worth it in the long-run. Our Craftsman chain-drive openers have done well, although they are pretty loud, a little "jerky", the plastic gears have needed replaced a couple of times, and we just recently had to replace the logic board on one of them...all just viewed as routine wear-and-tear after all of those ups and downs, I suppose. Anyway, that's my limited input. Good luck in whatever you decide. Drive safely and KEEP ON SAABING!!!
