Always was concerned a jack stand would slip or tip over, so would leave the floor jack under the car. This tended to limit space under the car making it difficult to do some work. When I started lifting a car with 2 floor jacks, one at each front emergency jack lift point, to get a higher lift in front and more open space with the jacks further back and to the sides. It also made a higher and more unstable reach for the jack stands. When using the jacks this way it became apparent the jacks themselves could be used as jack stands be placing a 4 x 4 across and on top of the jack frame. If the jack came down, the 4 x 4 would be trapped between the jack lift and bottom frames, and front wheels. For a higher lift, the 10" long 4 x 4's could be stood on end inside the jack frame directly below the lift pad. After putting up with leaky floor jacks for too long, and seeing some dramatic hydraulic blowouts over the years, looked around for non hydraulic jacks and ended up with a pricy all mechanical, made in USA EZ Car Lift. It's heavier and harder to move around, but it lifts level and higher, plus it is quite stable and roomy under the car. So much for hydraulic jacks and jack stands.
