What is your definition of middle class? You're saying an income of 180k is "solidly middle class", which I'm inferring you mean it's right in the bell part of the curve. I think you're out of touch with reality. I think it would be reasonable to say that the middle class must at least encompass the median income; one definition I found described it as between 67-200% of median income. Personally I think the middle third of income earners is a better definition, but those numbers are harder to find. Now, I don't even think isolating to SoCal is particularly relevant to the present topic, because it might simply reveal that a lot of people in SoCal are in fact rich. Let's just go with California as a whole, since it's easier to find stats for that, and it will still be higher than the national median. Median household income there is about 61.6k. 67-200% of that is 41k-133k. Using these numbers, you can see that 160-180k is not even close to qualifying as "solidly middle class", especially considering the fact that a majority of those households have two income earners. The reality is, if you make 166k or more, you're in the top 5%.
