OT: Wheel Bearings and ABS Faults Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sun, 14 Aug 2016 06:01:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
So this was not on a Saab, and it might be common knowledge to many others, but I learned something yesterday that I hadn't heard before. A failing wheel bearing can cause intermittent faults within the ABS system. A failing wheel bearing can result in steel ball to steel race impact within the bearing, impacts which produce a magnetic field. This is the same phenomena employed in MRI machines. These small magnetic fields can interfere with the ABS wheel sensor.
So a mysterious intermittent ABS fault may be indicative of a failing wheel bearing even before the wear-out becomes audible to the driver or occupant.
Car was the youngest son's 2002 GranAm.
