That's true... I also formerly didn't understand the concept of a large luxury hatch... I think the key is making it look appropriate... the early 9000 looked like too much of a bubble in the back, but the later ones are almost indistinguishable from a sedan, yet open cavernously. I know the differences between the 2 were not huge, but the subtle changes made a huge aesthetic difference to me... some of the new hatches are pretty well executed, others fugly (Audi, X4, X6, etc)... the key now is to get the right proportions to look sporty rather than bulbous and awkward... the KIA does ok with this (the Audi less so)... there needs to be a little bit of concavity imho in the hatch, at least in the metal...

The civic is interesting because they always used to have civic hatchbacks, but they were small and the shape was like a Fit is now - squarish back... but the new one is actually a fairly good size car, as big as the sedan, and of course these smaller sedans are all ballooning in size anyway, so that a modern civic is a fairly good size car... Not sure on the sales uptake, but I do see them around. Definitely more practical than the sedan, with a similar look...

I'm pleased to see this trend. How long will it last? who knows... like you say, depends on how they sell...
