Years ago, the CFL had a team in Ottawa called the Rough Riders, which were black and red with a white R on the helmets... This was a distinguishing feature of the CFL in that of a league with 9 teams, there were 2 teams of "the same name": Ottawa Rough Riders and Saskatchewan Roughriders (yes, the difference is a space and capitalization!!)... Over time, the franchise had some troubles, went through a few owners, some logo changes in the 90's which really were not great, and the last owner would not release the name... So they were reincarnated as the Ottawa Renegades, which was pretty mediocre at best... there were some ridiculous new colours etc also...
The current ownership group is outstanding and has reincarnated the franchise nicely, connecting football traditions and the city's logging history and building on this... though they bought the rights to "Rough Riders", they went with "Redblacks" due to Saskatchewan's objections to the old name, at least that is as I understand it... so the team is once again red, black and white with a big R on the helmets with essentially the same stylized font, but now it is in a saw blade design... red and black checks is also a traditional lumberjack jacket design, so that ties in, and fans wear those jackets to the games... which is useful because they can be quite cold at the end of the season - the East final was played in a snow storm this year - one TD celebration was making snow angels in the end zone...
All in all it's worked out pretty well - the new team is only 3 years old and they have been in the Grey Cup twice, winning it once... That doesn't happen too often with new franchises in pro sports! Next year, Ottawa hosts the 105th Grey Cup.
It's a fun league to watch because it is so unpredictable and full of risk taking with the bigger field, fewer downs, and other "unusual rules". Nothing is as tight as in the NFL so it depends what one enjoys watching. Lots of people up here prefer the NFL, but I enjoy the wild offensive game... in that sense, the Superbowl this year had a little bit in common! was fun to watch... was great to be able to watch two big comeback to OT championship games this year!
