Grew up south of Boston and have been a Patriots fan my entire life. My Dad took me to my first Pats game in November 1968 at Fenway Park for my 10th b'day and I've been with them through good times and bad ever since. Went to a ton of games in the '70s in Foxboro and rode my bike to most of them.
Watched every snap of Sunday's game with my sons and some guests. Looked very bleak for quite a while and I thought the Pats were dead as fried chicken when Gostkowski plunked the extra point off the upright. The Falcons had been beating the Pats up at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and I saw no reason that would change.
Trying to impart a lesson in life, I noted the vagueries of sports performance out of your teams and told my kids that this is exactly why you don't drop $3K for FAA-controlled seats at a SuperBowl.
But we didn't give up because the Falcons' defense was starting to look fatigued. The Pats started moving the ball, Brady was getting a bit more time, tackles were being missed, and they were moving the chains and getting points. Andy Benoit on cnnsi has a good read on conditioning and how the Patriots superior conditioning paid dividends against an Atlanta D that was just totally gassed towards the end of the 4th quarter.
Divine intervention played a part too with Edelman's catch, poor play calling and clock management by Atlanta, and being able to get two two-point plays after TDs. When the Pats won the OT coin toss and elected to receive, I thought it was game over. Oh, and the Falcons defender makes an end zone pick on Brady's poor pass to Mitchell in the corner of the end zone if he could just jump more than a foot off the ground. But he couldn't because he was exhausted.
Spent four years in Atlanta for college during the Steve Bartkowski years and worked with people there for many years as my company had a large facility there so I sympathize with their disappointment. Love Matt Ryan because of his BC links and hope he doesn't let this loss define him. Would like to see the Falcons with all that incredible talent (Julio Jones et al) back in the SB. But I am thrilled the Pats pulled it off. Told my kids that this game is exactly why you drop $3K on FAA-controlled seats at a SuperBowl! :)
Oh, and go Lions too!
