Roof needs to be relatively new to install solar panels Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 23 Mar 2017 12:28:20 In Reply to: Re: Well said, Snowmobile [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 23 Mar 2017 11:32:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You will need both an electrician and a roofer to repair any random leaks that develop later. Clearly not an insurmountable or cost prohibitive problem but something to bear in mind too.
Not certain how photo-voltaic shingles will work. Does each shingle need to be individually hard wired? Are the shingles actually a metal roof formed to look like shingles? If so, are they panels or individual pieces? Which trade or trades are necessary for a commercial installation? What inspectors are required to approve their use prior to and post install? Will the permit review require sealed/stamped drawings (common for electrical work but not roofing)?
My previous employer had a number of simple (i.e. warehouse) buildings with solar panels installed. And one of the buildings suffered a pretty expensive roof fire caused by an electrical short in the panel connections. Unfortunately, my employer was aggressively installing inexpensive roofs with only a 10-15 year life expectancy in the best conditions. The solar panel installation crews would then do considerable damage to these nearly new thin membrane inexpensive roofs installing the panels.
