I wasn't trying to be negative. In many respects the newer SAABs are better cars (depends a bit on one's preferences - newer cars are not so simple, so that aspect may be objectively not as great). My point was that most newer saabs are either hatchbacks (eg your viggen), or larger sedans (eg ng9-3, ng 9-5, even 9000/og9-5) that don't have a strong relationship in form to a 99 sedan. To me, in the 2000's GM created a disjoint in the design legacy... see link below, but there was a progression of overlapping design leaders, until Mauer and Lo were kind of parachuted in... seemed like a disjoint in product design at that point. Not that they are bad designers, but simply a disjoint. Maybe others saw that differently... but even the ng9-3 seemed to be more an effort to appeal to the masses more than connect to the legacy (eg no hatchback). Of course, that doesn't mean it is not a good car!
The BMW has a bit of a flip to the back, short length, and turbo that kind of reminds me of that sort of car that the 99 sedan was. Obviously no lineage there, but I can see how Craig could make that connection.
Not sure on the Alfa. I can kind of see what ursaw is saying maybe. Great to see Alfa back.
I'm not particularly romanticizing the 99 here. It's an important part of SAAB's legacy, but I have no desire to own one now. I own 2 c900's so I get the difficulties of keeping older cars on the road and recognize that there are differences vs more modern cars. There is something fun about that, but modern transportation has its upsides also.
That said, SAAB hasn't made anything since 2011 really so in a world where so many people lease cars for 4 years, there are no modern SAABs anymore! We all need to decide I guess what works for us. Honestly, before buying the 9-5, we looked around at some other options... but really the 9-5 was the right car for us regardless of the brand. Whether that will be the case the next time we are looking, is hard to say, as all the SAABs are getting older and there are very few post-2009 on the market... that's 8 years old now, and typically 100k miles... sadly time is marching on!
We do plan to keep at least 1 c900. c900's and 99's are turning the corner on valuation now that they are mostly gone... Will be interesting to see if the same happens for the newer ones - Viggen, 9000 Aero, 9-5 Aero, Turbo X? Maybe? hard to say at this point... The more unique the car, the better the chance of that, but cars have become so homogenous in recent time, and the ng9-3 is a little guilty of that also...
