As an avid BMW fan, in a way I am flattered by all the gossip and misinformation going around about BMWs.
No, the battery will not need to be programmed when it is disconnected. The programming is done to make the battery last much longer because the charging system will cycle the battery in an intelligent way. Unlike a typical car battery, BMW batteries sometimes last 12-15 years because of this. If the charging system is not programmed when the battery is replaced, the battery may not last as long (but still 4-6 years) if the replacement battery is materially different from the original. Programming the charging system for the new battery is a trivial matter that can be done with a smartphone app, or a cheap cable and free software, or at a BMW specialist.
Take a look at bmwcoding web site for lots of interesting information about coding BMWs.
