very interesting and well expressed, documented issue! possible solutions? 1) I saw some of this in Michigan when I grew up, lived there for 20 years and was car crazy as a teenager we could buy cheap cars $50-200 as they were rusted out . Many people had "winter beaters " the rusted cars they drove only in winter do they still do that? the nice cars never saw salty roads !were parked in a garage or stored. I guess folks use those floor mats, the new ones almost like pans that would capture most of the snow, water as I know.it gets on your feet walking in the snow, slush in the frozen (usually ) north but then, as you say, the water melts, is left in the car as a problem . BIG problem ! So I read, I think, about someone suggesting folks use a Dehumidifier in their car ! that would really work I think! it would be better if it could be permanently installed and hooked up to the mains (wall power )maybe under a seat ? the water out tube would have to be routed well . maybe we need heated floor mats ! ? why not ! yes if i was having my car rustroofed by ziebart , et all i might well take out all the carpet , underlayment and say spray it ! ( the ziebart might well be better there as it was not oily, messy ) i've heard the newer A/C systems use the A/C to dehumidify the interior but not enough eh ? regards,
