Looks like the 4-cylinder Diesel engines could be broken into three groups using various emission technologies.
MY 2015 and newer can, allegedly, be 'fixed' by VW at reasonable cost and resold. The Feds have approved VW's fix. MYs 2012-2014 require a different fix and the Feds haven't approved VW's solution. Anything older than 2012 will most likely be broken up and sold for scrap after sellable parts are salvaged. I don't think VW will market those in other countries with less stringent environmental rules (like South America or Africa) to prevent further brand damage.
