I just don't see "substantial" fuel savings with the Volt against comparable gas engine vehicles for the typical car buyer, even using your 8.5c/kWh figure from another post which is much lower than the current US average.
You mentioned Subaru. A 2017 Subaru Impreza 5-Door with automatic and AWD (Volt is only FWD) driven 15,000 miles/year 50/50 city and highway would only be around $45 more per month in fuel cost than a 2017 Volt.
