I wanted to take exception with some of the things you've mentioned.
First, I never get receipts because in all my years of driving, receipts just become more slips of paper in my wallet (I guess if your using yours as a tax deduction, then I would understand the need). I don't experience gasoline smells and haven't experience payment delays.
Recharging at home seems a great idea, almost like getting something for next to nothing, but how much recharging takes place overnight? Also, unless charging from solar panels (as Scott mentioned) there is some charge for the electricity. It's not free.
If this electric thing goes mainstream, there aren't nearly enough charging stations to accommodate all the cars that would need them, although I would agree with enough money, more could be built, but then, what happens to the cost of recharging?
As far as driving in rural areas, my Saab 9-5 easily goes 400+ miles on a tank of gas. Easily enough to transit from point A to B anywhere in the contiguous US. Driving a leisurely 60 mph and that range approaches 500 miles. Anymore rural than that and the Saab isn't making the trip. Refuel time is less than 10 minutes at any number of locations.
Also, I find it's hard to imagine supercharging at home, isn't that 480v?
The model 3 (or whatever it's called) doesn't get free super charging correct? What's the charge time and cost in those cases?
I'm not trying to poke holes in your vision. You like it, and it works for you so that's great. You've made some good points.
Other posters have made very good arguments questioning the purchase of electric vehicles both from a fiscal as well as operational points of view.
One last note, my wife is often fond of saying she has an autonomously driven car, it's me. Basically she tells me where to go and I program it in and drive there. No extra software required.
You've raised some good points about your views and I respect those.
