Copper gas line - NO! When I bought my house, the dryer was connected to the hard black iron gas line on the other side of the laundry room by about a 12 foot piece of thin "roll copper tubing" nestled up above (and probably touching) some iron heating pipes. This appeared to have been the setup for the entire time the 10-year-old dryer had been there. Knowing that this was a disaster waiting to occur, I replaced it with black iron pipe (separated from the heating pipes) and included a trap near the appliance connector, but put the shutoff valve a bit further up the pipe as it had been in my old house. I didn't know about the requirement to put the shutoff valve right before the flex pipe, but I suppose that I'll have to add one when it's time to get a new dryer or sell the house.
