undehood heat likely - at approx 135 degrees F a battery eroding processs calls sulfation starts to degrade the lead plates. Highest underhood temps occur after parking on a hot day in an enclosed area such as a garage.
The addition of that duct to the battery is laughable, cleary something GM added in a cheap attempt to reduce battery warrany claims.
