I agree with Justin's recommendation to go through your dad's insurance company vs. the other driver's company. The other company has no relationship with your dad and their only motivation is to minimize their payout using all tricks available to them (and they will try lots of tricks - BTDT). On the surface, this looks to them like an 11 year old "orphan" car, which for most makes is an almost instant "total loss".
When my car was hit, I started dealing with the other driver's insurance company and eventually got very frustrated with their lowball offer after declaring my car a total loss, and complete disregard for the reimbursements required under state law, i.e sales tax, registration and title fees, etc. Once I got them involved, my insurance company paid me twice as much, and I got to keep the car after paying them a nominal fee. They subrogated the other company and eventually also returned my deductible payment as well.
