We loved the Raleigh NC area when our son lived there.... Almost took a job with the Wake County School system, and another with a vertically integrated construction materials company to relocate there.
Winter driving is more ice than snow but there is snow in mid Winter. Thanksgiving is light jacket weather. You can plant hardy flowers in outside beds by Valentine's Day. Summers are warm to hot but humidity is tolerable. Hurricanes typically do not venture that far inland. Nice modern airport and the area has dynamic growth.
Lots of transplanted Northerners in the Raleigh area so you won't feel too much like an outsider. A local joke is that the name for the local town of Cary is actually an acronym: "Containment Area for Relocated Yankees".
The Raleigh area also sees an influx of "Half Backs". Northerners who moved South to Florida for retirement, decided they didn't like that much heat or missed the seasonal changes, so then moved half-way back North to Raleigh.
