Justin brings up the pricing scheme used by auto parts stores, where to get the "deal" you must buy the oil and the filter. Over the years I took advantage of many of these these M1 deals, but found in the long run I was not consuming the filters as fast as I was the oil (6.5 qt. NG 9-3 sump, top ups, etc.) I noticed my local Advanced Auto receipts would list out separate line items and prices for the filter and oil, they would add to $32. I started asking in my local stores if I bought the deal, could I return the filter? I ask under the premise of being interested in buying not one but two of the package deals, but really only needing the second 5 qt. jug. not the second filter. The clerks or manager are always happy to do so, they must be happy to move the extra jug of oil. Now the filter "value" is on the order of $10 after the "discount", and then I would add in a rebate if I timed it right. The last time I made the purchase this way, after rebate I figured I paid about $2.40 a qt for the oil and $6 for the filter. In a way the over inflated full retail filter price helped to enable this rediculously low price on the oil.

On another note, the bob is the oil guy website once had a article about a number of filters that Bob cut open to examine the inside components. M1, Wix, Purealator Pure1, all got great ratings in this unscientific comparative study. Fram Duraguards were found to be junk. I tried to find the artical again but the site has grown in the ten+ years since I last been there, it is a full on forum/ board site now.
