I would have thought sustained highway driving was the best way to get good range out of an EV. Most energy usage is during acceleration, getting all that mass up to speed. The EV's tend to be well designed aerodynamically, so they should have lower than average energy usage at speed on a highway.

The model S appeals to me as a car that is mildly similar to a 9000 in form. Like you, I need my newest car to be a long distance hauler, and adding time to those kinds of trips just isn't in the cards for us (though I know some people like to stop at a coffee shop for lunch etc, stop and look at some sights etc, I like to just drive).

That said, I am seriously considering the S (or similar) as a future car. I'm hoping that cost and capability will improve in the next few years as the market becomes more competitive. In the meantime, we're going to drive our 9-5's until the wheels fall off...
