If you're going to ride on a lot of beach sand and rought pavement, maybe you also should take a look at fat bikes. I commute year-round here in western NY state, about 10 miles/day, and didn't want to get into having multiple bikes. I bought a second-hand Surly Pugsley last Fall, 3.8" tires, disc brakes, steel frame, etc.
The bike is a bit heavy (steel frame), but IMHO well worth the tradeoff for all-weather performance, great exercise machine, and flat-bar posture for comfortable riding. For the warm weather, I'm going to swap out the 3.8" tires for less-aggressive-tread ones.
An unconventional choice, admittedly, but works well for me. I personally couldn't see going to a gym for bad-weather spinning exercise, and I've only missed about 10 days of riding all winter due to ice, deep snow.
