so you suggest buying used? Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Tue, 27 Mar 2018 08:44:05 In Reply to: Re: I'm getting the Felt, none-yet, Mon, 26 Mar 2018 17:36:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
To be honest, I mainly buy used now, and I do race mtb, though only at a "weekend warrior" level. I think the cost really depends on the type of bike you are looking at and good hybrid/city touring/comfort type bikes (like in this thread) are available under $1k...
That said, if you want to do technical mountain biking (even without racing), most bikes <$1000 are built with lower end parts. That can be a nuisance in terms of breakage and/or functionality, and some parts, like a heavy/cruddy fork, are prohibitively expensive to replace. The enjoyment factor goes up if you're riding something fairly light and responsive that will stand up to the abuse... That said, it doesn't cost a whole lot over $1000 to get something fairly decent new, especially if you find sales/discounts.
Used is a whole other matter. If I take a new bike out on 1 ride, it looks like a used bike. Lots of rock on our trails, and narrow gaps, so everything gets banged up. My race bike I bought used in mint condition for half it's new price tag, so a bit <$1k, and I have broken and replaced almost everything on that bike... I've simplified the drivetrain and upgraded part quality in the process. People buy high end bikes who don't use them much and then resell them at half their value when a newer model comes out. My message to those who do that: you are awesome! please keep up the good work! It's kind of like buying used SAABs...
I'm not a roadie, but I have friends who spent crazy $$ on their road bikes... but they seem to enjoy them and justify the cost by driving cars less. Cars do cost a lot to operate. I think to each their own. You can enjoy something without competing/being pro, but I agree, a "want" not a "need". Might fall into the category of "nuts"...
